Meet medical student Shyna
Kia ora! My name is Shyna and I’m a fifth-year medical student from the University of Auckland, graduating at the end of 2026.
I was born in the beautiful Islands of Fiji and raised in Tauranga. I have always wanted to work in a field where I could care for people, connect with them, and make a difference. That’s what led me to study Health Sciences, complete an Anatomy degree at Otago, and eventually follow my heart into medicine.
I have been lucky enough to join the team here at Fifth Ave Family Practice. I’m one of the first medical students they’ve hosted in quite a few years, and I feel incredibly grateful to be learning in such a supportive, kind, and experienced environment.
Everyone here has been so welcoming that coming into the clinic each day doesn’t feel like work. It’s something I genuinely look forward to.
As part of my training, I’m here to learn more about patient care in the community. It’s not just about diagnosing and treating illness, but about listening to people’s stories, building trust, and caring for the whole person.
This is such an important part of becoming a well-rounded doctor, and I feel incredibly lucky to be learning from both the amazing team here and our patients.
You may notice me sitting in during your appointment, or I may come in beforehand to take a history or ask a few questions. Don’t worry, your comfort and privacy always come first. Your doctor will always ask your permission first, and if you’d prefer not to have a medical student involved, that’s completely okay. It won’t affect your care at all.
Thank you for letting me be part of your journey. Your trust helps shape the doctor I am becoming. I am truly grateful to learn from you.
