At Fifth Avenue Family Practice, we take skin health seriously, especially given the high incidence of skin cancer in New Zealand, particularly in the Bay of Plenty region. That’s why we offer comprehensive skin cancer checks to our patients.
Regular skin checks are crucial in detecting skin cancer early when it is most treatable. Our experienced doctors will thoroughly examine your skin, looking for any suspicious moles or spots that may be indicative of cancer. If any such spots are found, we will take a biopsy to confirm the diagnosis and determine the best course of treatment.
All of our doctors have experience with skin cancer diagnosis and management so if you have any concerns with your skin please book an appointment with your GP. In addition, Dr Todd Hulbert and Dr Kiran Singh have completed advanced training in Skin cancer detection (Dermoscopy). Dr Todd Hulbert offers a dedicated skin cancer clinic on Monday afternoons and Friday mornings for skin checks and surgical treatments on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons. Dr Kiran Singh also offers skin checks on Wednesday afternoons through his Cosmetic Clinic.
Squamous cell carcinoma often presents as a red, scaly patch or bump, and may be mistaken for a rash or eczema.
Malignant melanoma is the most dangerous form of skin cancer, and often presents as a dark, irregularly-shaped mole that may be asymmetrical, have uneven colour, and be larger than the size of a pencil eraser.
Basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma are commonly treated with surgery, while malignant melanoma may require a wider excision, lymph node dissection, and further treatment such as radiotherapy and/or immunotherapy.
Don’t wait until it’s too late – schedule your skin cancer check today. Our team is dedicated to providing you with the highest quality care and ensuring your ongoing skin health.
