South Africa: An adventure of a lifetime
As one of our fabulous partners through collaboration, Travel Associates local advisor, Megan Elliott, has shared some highlights from her recent trip to South Africa.
South Africa is an ultimate destination with so much to offer – a dream destination for me that once seemed out of reach, so the moment I stepped onboard South Africa Airways in Perth, bound for Johannesburg, I knew this trip would be the adventure of a lifetime.
Game drives in private game reserves were an unforgettable highlight for me, an experience like no other, being in the wild, in a comfortable Jeep driven by a qualified game ranger. We had our eyes peeled for not only the Big Five, but also a long list of colourful birds and other exotic wildlife in their natural habitat. Walking safaris with our knowledgeable ranger were unparalleled, the thrill of encountering these majestic animals on foot made it an experience beyond compare.

With spectacular scenery like the iconic Table Mountain to the sprawling cityscape of Cape Town, we discovered, on foot, the beauty of the region. We enjoyed a guided kayak to Boulders beach to view penguins and fur seals, and paddled through the lagoon among the kelp forests where ‘My Octopus Teacher’ was filmed. One of the most exhilarating moments was riding in a vintage sidecar along the oceanside cliffs of the Cape Peninsula, with the wind in my face and views for days, it was a breathtaking way to experience the rugged coastline.
It is also a paradise for foodies, with a melting pot of different cultures. Cape Malay curry became a new favourite, along with South African Pinotage, a rich red wine we enjoyed as part of our cycling tour of Franschhoek wineries, exploring the area and gaining insight into local life. The warmth of the people I met was as comforting as the wine itself. South Africa offers diverse cultures and history with warm, hospitable people who add genuine connection and authenticity to every experience.

Despite common concerns about crime and illness, I found South Africa to be safe and welcoming when taking the usual travel precautions and seeking experienced guidance prior to travel. The country’s modern infrastructure made travel convenient and hassle-free, while offering exceptional value for money.
As I reflect on my journey through South Africa it has awakened my love for adventure and left an indelible mark on my soul. The breathtaking landscapes, thrilling wildlife adventures, rich cultural experiences and the genuine warmth of the people, made this a trip of a lifetime and created memories I’ll carry forever.
