CGMs/Insulin Pumps FUNDED
The 1 October was a major milestone for those with Type 1 Diabetes as Continuous Glucose Monitors (CGMs) were finally funded in New Zealand.
Prior to this, self-funding of CGMs could cost as much as $400 per month.
A CGM allows 24-hour monitoring of blood sugar levels without the need to fingerpick. CGMs can simplify blood sugar management by providing a snapshot of glucose levels at the time of the test. It has many advantages, including tracking, recording and alerting when blood sugar levels (BGLs) are too high, too low, or just right.
People who use a CGM often report having better blood sugar management compared to finger-prick testing alone. There are still times when finger-pricking maybe needed to check BGL.
CGM’s come with an app which can invite caregivers to monitor levels remotely. This can be useful when extra support is needed for management of BGLs.
There are several CGM options available: CGMs can be used by themselves or with a compatible insulin pump.
If you already have an insulin pump or are considering one, three sensors are available – Dexcom G6 & G7 and Freestyle Libre 3+. These CGMs talk to insulin pumps and the pumps funded for those with T1DM include Ypso and Tandem T-slim.
You can use your mobile phone to read BGLs via an app if the phone is compatible or with a receiver device.
All CGM’s have the availability to produce a report showing trends and patterns in BGL that can help with better diabetes control. These reports can be shared with your health care practitioners to provide support and ongoing diabetes care if needed.
We are aware there are still patients with T1DM who have not taken up the offer to receive a funded CGM and we would love everyone who meets the criteria to have access. Additionally, if you have T1DM and you are interested in an insulin pump, please see one of the Nurse Practitioners or your GP to discuss.
