At Fifth Avenue Family Practice our aim is to make your travel preparation easy, cost-effective, and tailored to your needs. Planning your trip in advance is very important. Our Travel Clinic at Fifth Avenue Family Practice in Tauranga will make sure you are ready for your upcoming adventures.

Fortunately, most travel-related health issues can be prevented by pre-travel planning, safety precautions and vaccinations.

Travel health consultations provide an opportunity to discuss specific details of your trip. This health information is necessary to provide you with the medical advice tailored specifically to you and your family, with particular emphasis on the destination and any associated risks.

International travel can be stressful. Our aim is to make sure you are well prepared for your trip and aware of potential health risks before you travel. A pre-travel health consult will help minimise risk by various means, such as vaccinations, malaria prophylaxis (if applicable), and provision of ‘just in case’ medications. In addition, our travel doctors are both certified Yellow Fever service providers.

Our doors are open to EVERYONE! We recommend booking a travel health appointment at least 4-6 weeks before your departure. Dr Nick Hanna and Dr Irina Bardsley are both GPs with specialist qualifications in Travel Medicine. They will guide you through everything you need to know to stay safe and healthy during your travels. Additionally, our highly skilled travel nurse, Karlene, is available to offer advice tailored to a wide range of travel destinations.

Two easy steps:  4-6 weeks prior to travel

Step 1:  Complete a Travel Health Questionnaire for each person

Travel Health Services New Zealand

At least 4-6 weeks prior to departure, download the Travel Health Questionnaire. Type directly into the document on screen and save a separate file for each person. Have your itinerary nearby to do this.

Email us all completed forms at least 1 – 2 weeks before you need your health appointment. We will review your information ahead of your visit.

Step 2:  Book your Travel Health appointment

Once you have sent your completed document via our email form we will contact you to make a travel appointment with one of our travel doctors, Dr Nick Hanna or Dr Irina Bardsley. Travel appointments are generally 30-45minutes depending on your destination. Once the travel doctors have assessed your Travel Health Questionnaire they will advise reception of the timeframe needed for your consultation. We will call you to provide an apointment appropriate to your Travel Itinerary.

Travel consultation fees apply – From $135 per person for a 30-minute appointment. Vaccines and nurse time are an additional cost.

We advise booking 4-6 weeks in advance because some vaccines require more than one dose, a week or two apart. This allows time for the vaccines to start working before you leave.

Our medical team works together to provide you with the very best travel advice.  This includes the latest preventative measures for insect-borne diseases including Malaria, Dengue Fever, Japanese Encephalitis and much more. We can also provide you with recommendations for avoiding accidents and injury, first aid, jet lag, diarrhoea, and motion sickness.
